The LUMC course ‘Basic Methods and Reasoning in Biostatistics’ covers the fundamental toolbox of biostatistical methods plus a solid methodological basis to properly interpret statistical results. The course is a mandatory part of the LUMC Graduate School Program and a prerequisite for any of the advanced biostatistical courses offered by the LUMC.
The course is given during a single week, followed by a final examination on the next Tuesday.

In this course we will cover the basics of biostatistics and participants will learn how to analyze practical problems in medical research using statistical software. Subjects covered are among others: descriptive statistics, principles of statistical estimation and testing, cross tabulation and chi-square test, Student t-test and the correspondence with non-parametric counterparts, simple regression and correlation, introduction to analysis of variance, study design, interpretation of observational data, bias, multiple testing, good statistical practice, sample size calculation, pros and cons of p-values.

week: 11-15 February 2019
exam Tuesday 19 February 2019

Registration on Monday: 09.00 - 09.30

Every day from 08.45 - 17:00

  • At the beginning of each day except Monday, the material of the previous day is discussed during a general question session from 08.45 - 09.30 followed by 2 lectures.
  • The material of Friday will be discussed on Monday 18 February 2019 from 9-10 in lecture hall J1-83 of the main building
  • Every afternoon participants work individually in the electronic learning environment on their own PCs/laptops on their own workplace. For participants who do not have their workplace at the LUMC we booked a separate room where you can work.
  • Please note that you have to sign the attendance list every day

Make sure you have either SPSS or R (according to your preference) installed on your computer to work through the exercises. Non-LUMC participants with a non-windows PC (like a Mac) should make sure they obtain and install a (evaluation version of) SPSS or R before the course. You can find an SPSS trial version at https://www.ibm.com/analytics/spss-trials. . R is a free software environment and can be downloaded from the R project website. All LUMC participants should make sure they have access to SPSS or R and should work on their own PCs at any location convenient for them. Contact the ICT department if you need help with the installation.
